A Cedar Rapids Fire Department vehicle responding to a fire report was struck by a pickup Thursday afternoon.
The Fire Department's sport-utility command vehicle was hit at the corner of 29th Street and Oakland Road NE around 1:15 p.m. The SUV went around stopped vehicles on Oakland Road NE on its way to the fire call and was struck by a pickup headed west, authorities said.
The driver of the pickup, whose name has not been released, was taken by ambulance to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Fire Department Battalion Chief George Bockenstedt, who was driving the SUV, was not injured.
Fire Department spokesman Greg Buelow said the lights and sirens were activated on the SUV. He said a damage estimate had not been completed, but he called it "major damage."
Police have not said which driver was at-fault for the crash. The collision took out a stoplight at the intersection.
Traffic was slow through the area for more than 30 minutes.
