CLASS 3A
CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY (14-4) vs. IOWA CITY WEST (17-2), 5 p.m.
Noteworthy: Kennedy comes in ranked seventh to West's third, though Cougars won regular-season match, 1-0, in late April. West's only other loss was to fellow 3A state entrant Linn-Mar, 2-1. Kennedy also lost to Linn-Mar, 2-1. This is seventh consecutive trip to state for Cougars, fifth for Women of Troy. West lost to Ankeny in last year's championship, 1-0, in penalty kicks. Emily Feltes leads Kennedy with 19 goals, with Kaela Dickenman adding 16. West has been balanced offensively all season, with six players scoring six or more goals, led by Quinn Terrell's 13.
LINN-MAR (13-6) vs. ANKENY (18-0), 5:45 p.m.
Noteworthy: Tough initial task for Linn-Mar, which is in state tournament for second time in three years. Ankeny is top-ranked, unbeatean and defending 3A champion. Thanks in large part to injuries, No. 10 Lions lost final four regular-season games but rebounded with two postseason wins. Four of top six Lions scorers are freshman, led by Olivia Garcia (15 goals in 18 games). Ankeny's top goal scorer is junior Amber Nieland. The Hawkettes have been so dominant they played just three one-goal games this season: wins of 2-1 over West Des Moines Valley and Waukee, and 1-0 over St. Charles (Ill.) North. Keeper Nikkie Inskeep has given up just 11 goals this season ... and scored two.
Other Matches Johnston vs. Bettendorf, 5:15 p.m. Waukee vs. West Des Moines Dowling, 5:30 p.m.
CLASS 2A
CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER (15-2) vs. ADEL-DESOTO-MINBURN (15-3), 2:45 p.m.
Noteworthy: Will this historic run continue? Xavier has been to state 10 years in a row and to a championship game eight straight years. Saints have won six titles in a row, with another setting a girls' state record for consecutive championships regardless of sport. Top-ranked Saints are surely the favorites, led by top senior trio of forward Annie Dale (15 goals), midfielder Lauren Konchar (seven goals) and defender Mary Levett (three goals). Junior Kayla Armstrong leads team with 29 goals in 17 games. This is second straight state trip for ADM, which lost in quarterfinals to Glenwood last season, 3-0. Senior Crystal Hochstetler has 20 goals in 14 games.
UNION COMMUNITY (15-3) vs. GLENWOOD (17-1), 3 p.m.
Noteworthy: Sixth-ranked Knights are in "The Show" for fourth consecutive season. They've done everything but win it all, losing last two years in finals, including 3-1 last year to Davenport Assumption. Xavier got them in 2010 championship game, 2-1, and in 2009 semifinals. Union has allowed all of four goals this season, losing 1-0 games to Waverly-Shell Rock, Nevada and Class 3A Cedar Falls. The loss to W-SR was avenged in regional finals. Keeper Whitney Blunt has given up just three goals for a .193 goals against average. Third-ranked Glenwood is at state third consecutive time, losing in 2A semifinals to Xavier last season. Senior Michaela Moore has 44 goals, fourth in the state.
Other Matches Pella vs. Sioux City East, 2:30 p.m. Dallas Center-Grimes vs. North Scott, 3:15 p.m.
CLASS 1A
CENTER POINT-URBANA (14-5) vs. DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION (20-0): 12:15 p.m.
Noteworthy: It's deja vu for these clubs, who met in 1A quarterfinals last season. Assumption won that match, 1-0, en route to championship. Top-rated Knights are high-scoring bunch, with 113 goals, second-best in state to Waterloo Columbus' 131. Five players have recorded double-digit goal totals. Sophomore wunderkind Rose Ripslinger has 26 goals and 13 assists in 16 games. Juniors Jessica Wooldridge (32 goals) and Morgan Croell (16) pace CP-U's offense. Eighth-ranked Stormin' Pointers, who have won six matches in row, have had girls' soccer program only seven years but been to state twice.
IOWA CITY REGINA (14-3) vs. SIOUX CITY HEELAN (15-1), 12:30 p.m.
Noteworthy: Sixth-ranked Regina is celebrating eighth year of having a girls' soccer program in high style with first state tourney appearance. Regals' three losses were to Waterloo Columbus (10-0), Cedar Rapids Washington (2-1) and Davenport Assumption (5-0). Zoe Dutchik ranks third in state with 45 goals, accomplished in just 14 games. Katie Wick and Tori Lust have added 19 and 17, respectively. Heelan's lone loss was in second game of season to Class 3A state tourney participant Sioux City East, 1-0. Crusaders, rated third, are paced offensively by Sam Tymkowicz, who has 19 goals. They are at state for sixth straight year.
