Perry should know Constitution
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 9, 2011 2:09 pm
Rick Perry should have paid more attention to other conservatives when they read the Constitution in the House of Representatives. If he had, he might have learned that the president cannot “send Congress home,” as he promises to do in his current television ads. And, I don't think the Constitution allows a president to “cut in half” or in any other way change salaries of congressmen and senators.
But, Perry asks us to support him based in part on two promises that, if attempted, would put him in league with any other dictator in modern times who consolidated power after diminishing their legislatures.
I am hopeful that Republicans will reject this sort of demagoguery when they pick their candidate. If Perry gets nominated, let us hope that the rest of the electorate will reject the tyranny Perry advocates.
