The Cedar Rapids Kernels are helping local youths participate in the Great American Pastime this summer.
Thanks to Minor League Baseball, Rawlings, Perfect Game USA, and the Kernels, children from five Cedar Rapids elementary schools are able to participate in the League of Dreams baseball league.
Now in its second year, the League of Dreams is a non-competitive coach-pitch league for second and third graders. The league runs on Tuesday and Wednesdays from June 7-July 13 and stresses the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and being active outdoors.
Generous donations from MiLB, Rawlings, and Perfect Game USA allow students to participate in the league for free. Jerseys, caps, and equipment are provided, as is professional instruction from Perfect Game USA - the world's largest baseball scouting service.
The final two dates will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The League of Dreams culminates with an All-Star game on July 12, where kids will have the opportunity to play where the Kernels play, and a Recognition Night at the ballpark on July 13.
In addition, all participants will receive up to four tickets to the Kernels game against the Bowling Green Hot Rods on July 13.
There are limited openings for the league and interested students are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. For more information on the League of Dreams, contact league director Matthew Schemmel at mschemmel@perfectgame.org.
