Washington High School in Cedar Rapids is Iowa's #1 high school according to the University of Iowa's Belin-Blank Center and the 2010 Iowa Advanced Placement Index. Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School is ranked second.
The Iowa AP Index is based on 2009 AP exam and graduation data. The Index is a ratio that helps determine the extent of Advanced Placement course opportunities at each of Iowa's high schools.
Washington offers 25 Advanced Placement courses which are college courses taught in high school. In May, students have the opportunity to take AP exams which are administered under rigorous guidelines and scored by national panels of college professors and high school AP teachers. In 2009, Washington administered 806 AP examinations to students. The high school has 311 graduates leading to an Iowa AP Index of 2.6, highest of all Iowa high schools. Kennedy offers 27 AP courses and administered 884 exams, with an index of 2.5 and average scores of 3.27.
Washington will be honored at a University of Iowa ceremony in the fall.
