Harry John Holmes, 68, of Palo, died at his home Friday, July 9, 2021. Services:
10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A rosary will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the Teahen
Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family after the rosary until 7 p.m., and Monday at the church from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.
Harry is survived by his wife, Rita; five daughters, Rachel (Craig) Dvorak, Wendy Holmes (Tom Waldrep), Gloria (Vince) Snyder, Frances (Dave) Kelly and Elizabeth (Matthew) Arb; three sons, Jeremy (Jennifer) Holmes, Harry "Abe" (Laura Clasen) Holmes and Sam (Raven Hall) Holmes; six brothers, William James Jr., David (Marilyn), Joseph, Frank, George and Patrick Holmes; four sisters, Mary (Roger) Roff, Therese (David) Wirtz, Dorothy Holmes and Tina (Cody Wade) Holmes; and 22 grandchildren.
Harry was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Holmes and Kathryn Van Deusen; and a brother, James Norbert Holmes.
Harry was born July 30, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, the son of William and Agnes Ryan Holmes. He attended Arthur School, St. Matthew School, Roosevelt Middle School and Kirkwood College. He married Rita Kauffman on Aug. 26, 1972, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Harry retired as a machinist in 2010 after 37 years with Midland Forge. He was a member of St. Patrick Church.
Harry enjoyed volunteering and transporting food donations to the Metro Catholic Outreach. He found peace praying in the Divine Mercy Adoration Chapel at St. Patrick, and was always willing to help his family in time of need.
