Lawmakers wrong to pursue same-sex issue

I am a social worker who believes in the importance of policy issues in the area of same-sex marriage. The National Association of Social Workers' code of ethics is founded on a belief in self-determination and social justice for all individuals. Same-sex couples who are married or who are fighting for this right make up an oppressed population.
The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states that “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.”
The Iowa Supreme Court has been, since its inception, a proponent of civil rights, especially for minority groups. The recent removal (by voters) of three Iowa Supreme Court justices who supported this freedom shows that Iowa can no longer uphold this reputation.
The recent speech to state legislators by Zach Wahls countered the arguments that many hold in regard to same-sex couples. Wahls highlighted the fact that same-sex couples are law-abiding and taxpaying and can successfully raise children.
The Legislature is spending its time in session debating this insignificant issue rather than working toward creating more jobs, improving the education and health care systems, and balancing the budget.
