Fire investigators determined that a candle caused the fire that sent an elderly woman to the hospital Saturday.
The fire at Oak Hill Manor, 1321 15th St. SE, damaged an apartment on the second floor of the 24-unit complex when it broke out just before 7:30 a.m. Maria Pilapil, 77, was transported to Mercy Medical Center for possible smoke inhalation.
Fire Department spokesman Greg Buelow said about a half-dozen candles that were lit in the woman's bedroom ignited nearby cardboard, causing the unintentional fire. Pilapil remained in the hospital Monday, Buelow said.
Candles caused four residential fires in Cedar Rapids last year. Buelow said it is recommended to keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn, and to blow out candles before you leave the room or go to bed. Candle holders that are sturdy and won't tip are also recommended.
