Letter: Avoid businesses that encourage divisiveness

A friend and I walked into a store in LeClaire recently, both wearing red sweaters. The saleswoman cried 'You're wearing red! You must be Trump supporters like me!” We told her we voted for Clinton, but she tried hard to convince us of Trump's virtues.
She said he spent $100 million of his own money on his campaign. (Trump spent only $66 million of his own money, Wall Street Journal, Nov. 7.) She argued that he was a successful businessman. (His businesses went bankrupt six times, Washington Post, Sept. 25.) When she continued to tout Trump's slogans, I quietly left her shop without a purchase.
The saleswoman has a right to her own political views, but she can't assume all customers wearing red agree with the divisive comments made by Trump during the election campaign.
I will continue to wear red - it's still my favorite color. But I urge readers to exercise 'pocketbook resistance.” Send a contribution to the ACLU, as I have, to protect everyone's rights and don't patronize businesses that encourage the politics of divisiveness that the candidate who lost the popular vote ‘trumpeted' during his presidential campaign.
