Evolving standards are not cause for removal

Regarding Paul Rudolph's Jan. 22 letter about “evolving standards” used by justices: He believes that justices who use such standards in rulings should be removed from the bench.
It is precisely evolving standards that are responsible for the many arguably positive ways American society has changed in the course of our history. A couple of examples are legalizing interracial marriage and granting women the right to vote. Both of these were met with strong social opposition, and changes were only made because of evolving standards. Eventually, most of society accepted both.
Therefore, consider these people who are adamantly fighting against the current evolution of standards (such as legalizing same-sex marriage). It seems legitimate to wonder if they would have been roughly the same as those in the past who fought against the legalization of interracial marriage and granting women the right to vote.
I am sure that last comment will cause defensiveness among many, but the logic is sound.
