Wash boys' beat Xavier, 55-39

CEDAR RAPIDS - The biggest debate this side of the 2008 presidential election was held Tuesday night at Xavier High School. It concerned the final score of the boys' basketball game there. The scoreboard initially had Cedar Rapids Washington 57, Cedar Rapids Xavier 37 at the final buzzer. Then it changed quickly, taking two points away from Wash and adding two for Xavier. One team's score keeper had it Washington 57, Xavier 39. The two radio stations in the house, let alone the two coaching staffs, didn't know what direction to go.The score that's being turned in for official purposes is 55-39. Whatever, the Class 4A 10th-ranked Warriors won in a romp, and that's all you really need to know.“Good for 20 minutes,” Washington Coach Brad Metzger. “Then the final 12 ...”He didn't have to finish that thought. Wash (7-3, 5-1 MVC Mississippi Division) matriculated its way to a 27-10 halftime lead, holding Xavier (1-9, 1-5 Valley Division) without a point for about a 10-minute stretch between the first and second quarters.A lot of the second half turned sloppy, in no small part because of the spread. Nevertheless it's a victory for the Warriors, who host top-ranked Linn-Mar in a biggie Friday night.“I've been thinking about Linn-Mar this whole year,” said Washington's Josh Oglesby. “We're excited to play them, excited that they're still number one in the state. To be the best, you've got to beat the best. Friday night, we get a chance to do that on our home court.”Oglesby had a game-high 22 points and eight rebounds, complemented as always by Wes Washpun, who finished with 16 points, including three dunks. More than half of Xavier's points came from the arc, with guard Ben McDermott finishing with a team-high 13 points.“The kids understand the situation,” said Xavier Coach Matt Jenkins, whose team has lost six in a row. “Number one, it's not because of our effort. It's definitely not because of our effort. Right now, it's just a process of us needing to get better.”Here is the game boxscore and a quick video interview with future Iowa Hawkeye Oglesby:
