Thompson nets school-record 362 in City High romp
Jeff Linder Sep. 9, 2011 10:30 pm
IOWA CITY -- A new rushing record. And the same old Boot.
Ronald Thompson established a new Iowa City High single-game rushing record, pounding for 362 yards on 37 carries -- including four touchdowns -- as the Class 4A second-ranked Little Hawks punished No. 9 Iowa City West, 42-24, in a Mississippi Valley Conference football game at Bates Field.
"It's all the O-line and the receivers, blocking downfield," said Thompson, who eclipsed Rob Thein's old record of 313 yards, set in 1994. "I was running north and south all night."
Symbolically and deservedly, Thompson carried the Boot trophy into the north end zone, where his teammates were waiting. It was City's eighth straight win over West.
Last year, Thompson ran for 284 yards and five touchdowns in last year's 41-21 City High victory over the Trojans. So in two years, he has rushed for 646 yards against City's archrival.
City High (3-0) extended its MVC win streak to 31 games, matching the league record set by West from 1995 through 1999.
City High was one-dimensional offensively, but one dimension was plenty. The Little Hawks netted 485 yards on 63 plays, all but one play on the ground.
Thompson had touchdown runs of 42, 4 and 7 yards in the first half, then capped his evening with a 13-yard score on his final carry with 4:03 left in the game.
"There was a lot of trash talking going on, but we did what we had to do," Thompson said. "We kept the Boot back here."
Quarterback Jasper Washington added 113 rushing yards and two touchdown runs. He threw the ball twice, but both passes were nullified by penalties -- one on City, one on West (2-1).
The Little Hawks led 28-3 at halftime and extended the advantage to 35-3 in the third quarter on Washington's second TD.
West edged closer later, thanks to some shoddy City special teams. West blocked three City punts, and the Little Hawks botched the snap of another.
The Trojans had 205 yards and more first downs (12-11) than City High in the first half, but just three points to show for it. The Trojans turned it over on downs at the City 45, fumbled it away twice and missed a field goal.
West's Charles Rogers rushed for 102 yards and passed for 174. Dondre Alexander caught nine passes for 114 yards.
City High travels to Cedar Rapids Xavier next week. West hosts Cedar Rapids Prairie.
