The top 12 area games (and a couple more) for Week 6 (complete schedule):
CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON at IOWA CITY HIGH
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Bates Field
Records and rankings: Washington is 3-2 overall, 1-2 MVC Mississippi Division; Class 4A second-rated City High is 5-0, 3-0.
Notable: City High's Mississippi Valley Conference win streak stands at 33 games. The Little Hawks came alive in the second half last week, quickly turning a 6-0 halftime lead into 34-0, and ultimately a 34-13 win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Ronald Thompson ranks second in 4A in rushing yards, at 1,068 (with 14 touchdowns). Washington's Flynn Heald is second in 4A in receptions (41) and receiving yards (689). This is the first bit of a brutal three-week stretch for the Warriors, who face Linn-Mar in Week 7 and Iowa City West in Week 8.
CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER at IOWA CITY WEST
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Trojan Field
Records and rankings: Xavier is 3-2 overall, 2-1 MVC Valley Division; Class 4A No. 9 West is 4-1, 4-0.
Notable: Xavier has lost two straight games against the state's top two ranked teams (Iowa City High and Cedar Falls), and it doesn't get much easier this week. West has put up 113 points in the last two weeks, albeit against winless foes Cedar Rapids Prairie and Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Charles Rogers ranks fifth in 4A in total offense among quarterbacks, accumulating 397 rushing yards and 782 through the air. Xavier played both City High and Cedar Falls close for a half, but both pulled away from the Saints after intermission.
IOWA CITY REGINA at CAMANCHE
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Camanche
Records and rankings: Class 2A top-rated Regina is 5-0 overall, 3-0 Class 2A District 5; Camanche is 4-1, 3-0.
Notable: Regina goes after its 20th consecutive win, and is heavily favored to get it. The Regals have outscored their three district foes by a 141-7 count. Regina is averaging 10.0 yards per carry, the highest average in Class 2A. Jacob Vollstedt leads the way with 616 yards and just 48 carries (12.8 ypc). Camanche has run up a nice record, but the Indians' four wins have come against teams with a combined 1-19 record. The Indians have scored 38.3 points per game against district competition. The winner is the sole leader of 2A District 5.
DUBUQUE SENIOR at LINN-MAR
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Linn-Mar Stadium
Records and rankings: Senior is 1-4 overall, 1-4 MVC Mississippi Division; Class 4A fifth-rated Linn-Mar is 5-0, 3-0.
Notable: Linn-Mar was close to flawless in the first half of last week's 44-14 win over Cedar Rapids Prairie. The Lions scored on each first-half possession and limited the Hawks to two first downs on the way to a 37-0 halftime lead. Linn-Mar's offensive average of 43 points per game ranks fifth in 4A; its defensive rate of 12 ppg is No. 6. Mark Atwater ranks third among 4A quarterbacks in total offense, with 1,244 yards (including 872 in the air). Senior has has a tough time moving the ball, averaging a skinny 11.2 points per game.
MARION at CENTER POINT-URBANA
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Center Point
Records and rankings: Marion is 4-1 overall, 2-1 Class 3A District 5; CPU is 0-5, 0-3.
Notable: With DeWitt Central, Union and Maquoketa looming, this is probably a must-get for the Indians if they wish to make the 3A playoffs. Colton Storla has risen dramatically on the 3A rushing chart in the last two weeks; he now rates sixth at 737 yards. Storla's 13 rushing touchdowns (including seven against Anamosa in Week 4) rates second in 3A. CPU has struggled against the second most difficult schedule of 3A teams (its first six opponents are all 4-1). The Stormin' Pointers have not scored in double digits yet in a game this season.
ALBURNETT at NORTH CEDAR
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Stanwood
Records and rankings: Both teams are 5-0 overall, 3-0 Class 1A District 6. North Cedar is ranked ninth in 1A.
Notable: Alburnett's offense has become more productive each week, and averages a robust 43.6 points per game. Mitchell Harger is the bread and butter; he leads the state (all classes) with 1,214 yards. Harger averages 13.5 yards per carry and has scored 19 touchdowns. North Cedar's Jordan Hay is doubtful after suffering a dislocated left (non-throwing) shoulder early in last week's game against Highland, but the Knights scored their final 24 points of the game to rally, 30-15. The winner owns sole possession of the 1A-6 lead.
POSTVILLE at NORTH TAMA
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Traer
Records and rankings: Class A fifth-ranked Postville is 5-0 overall, 3-0 Class A District 4; No. 2 North Tama is 5-0, 2-0.
Notable: Postville will try to end the Redhawks' 19-game winning streak, but to do so the Pirates must do something nobody else has done this season -- score. North Tama has outscored its first five opponents by a 248-0 count. On the other hand, the Redhawks' first five foes have combined for two wins, so this will be a steep upgrade in competition. Postville's Dallas Imoehl has rushed for 618 yards and six touchdowns. The Pirates have been tested; three of their wins have been by nine points or less.
SOUTH WINNESHIEK at NORTH FAYETTE
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at West Union
Records and rankings: South Winn is 5-0 overall, 3-0 Class 2A District 4; No. 8 North Fayette is 4-1, 3-0.
Notable: The winner of this game takes sole possession of first place in 2A-4, and it's the biggest test yet for South Winn. The Warriors have improved drastically after last year's 1-8 disappointment. Two 2A backs have reached the 1,000-yard plateau, and both of them will be featured at West Union. North Fayette's Jake Greco has rushed for 1,038 yards and 11 touchdowns while South Winn's Colton Hageman has rumbled for 1,020 yards and 19 TDs. North Fayette has won or shared seven consecutive district titles, and the Hawks' district record since 2004 is 51-1.
DECORAH at WEST DELAWARE
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Manchester
Records and rankings: Both teams are 4-1 overall, 3-0 Class 3A District 4. Decorah is rated 10th in 3A.
Notable: Both of these teams are trying to keep pace with Waverly-Shell Rock atop the 3A-4 standings (WSR is at Crestwood). Both teams dropped a close one in non-district play (Decorah to Union, 20-17; West Delaware to Western Dubuque, 17-16). West Delaware's Sam Lahr is fifth among 3A rushers, with 740 yards and 11 touchdowns. Last year, these teams shared the district title (along with WSR), and West Delaware thumped Decorah, 35-7, in the state quarterfinals.
LONE TREE at BGM
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Brooklyn
Records and rankings: Class A fourth-rated Lone Tree is 5-0; No. 9 BGM is 4-1.
Notable: A dandy of a Class A cross-district game. Lone Tree has been as impressive as anybody in the 11-man game's smallest class; the Lions have outscored their first five opponents by a 262-39 count, and their offense has been the most productive in Class A. Bryan Forbes and Jordan Quigley have combined to intercept 10 passes. BGM has won four straight by a 179-6 count since falling to 2A No. 1 Regina in Week 1. Danny Brau has rushed for 550 yards and eight touchdowns.
MAQUOKETA at UNION
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at La Porte City
Records and rankings: Maquoketa is 4-1 overall, 3-0 Class 3A District 5; Union is 4-1, 2-1.
Notable: It appears the 3A-5 race is a five-team battle for four playoff spots, and both of these teams are right in the mix. Maquoketa suffered a 24-21 setback to West Delaware in its opener, but has blasted everything since to the tune of 172-15, including a 36-0 rout of DeWitt Central last week. Maquoketa's Chase Coakley is among the state's best run-throw quarterbacks -- he has combined for 1,122 yards. Union bounced back from a Week 4 loss to Central by beating Anamosa 56-27 last week in a game that featured more than 1,000 yards of offense.
MIDLAND at LANSING KEE
Time and site: 7 p.m. Friday, at Lansing
Records and rankings: Midland is 6-0 overall, 2-0 Eight-Man District 4; Kee High is 4-1, 2-0.
Notable: Midland has wrapped up its first winning season since 1994, and a win in the northeast corner of the state will enhance the Eagles' district-title hopes. Ryan Leonard ranks third in eight-man rushing at 874 yards and 15 touchdowns. Kee High counters with Jordon Milton (737 yards, 13 TDs). Midland averages a hefty 55 points per game while Kee's defense is stout for an eight-man team -- 16.4 points per game.
OTHER GAMES INVOLVING METRO/IOWA CITY TEAMS:
Cedar Rapids Kennedy (2-3) vs. Cedar Rapids Jefferson (0-5), 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium
Cedar Rapids Prairie (0-5 overall, 0-3 MVC Valley Division) at Waterloo East (3-2, 2-2), 7:15 p.m. Friday
Iowa State recruit Charles Rogers (11) and No. 9 Iowa City West host Cedar Rapids Xavier in the top MVC game Friday. (David Scrivner/SourceMedia Group)
