Nothing to fear from same-sex families

Unlike former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, I find it comforting to know that President Obama is able to make growth in his social policies. As he knows better, he does better. It is what I hope for in a president.
Santorum says Obama has made a shift on same-sex marriage issues. Hurrah! I recall during the campaign that Obama was supportive of equal rights for same-sex couples but felt the term marriage was reserved for opposite-sex couples only. President Obama has learned that federal laws make it hard to achieve that equality if the term is not marriage.
It makes me proud that our president has had an “aha moment.”
Santorum states he is willing to stand up and fight for families. Does he mean only opposite-sex married households? There are many families that don't fall under those terms. We need to protect all families - single parents, unmarried parents, opposite-sex parents and same-sex parent families. Maybe even families without children.
I sure hope Santorum makes some growth in his social policies before coming to Iowa again to hold hands with those who seek to destroy what they do not know. Iowa has nothing to fear from same-sex families and everything to gain. Wouldn't it be great if Terry Branstad had an “aha moment” as well?
