Last Call -- Arizona

-- Iowa had the best sweatpants team in the nation on the sidelines during its 27-17 victory over Arizona on Saturday.
Offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga (undisclosed illness), tight end Tony Moeaki (ankle) and wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (hamstring) wore black sweatpants with gray T-shirts for Saturday's game. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said day-to-day for all three after the game. He's hopeful, but he can't predict which way it'll go for their availability for Penn State.
Bulaga didn't practice this week and hasn't since Sept. 8.
"I think they all had a chance, that's the good news," Ferentz said. "The bad news is there's no way to predict it right now."
Here's a quick look at what their replacements did Saturday:
Left tackle Riley Reiff: The redshirt freshman was pitted against UA defensive end Brooks Read most of the day. Reed became UA's best pass rusher last season and he did it in big games. In the Cats' 42-27 victory over Cal, Reed picked up two sacks. Against USC, Reed forced a fumble out of QB Mark Sanchez and that helped UA tie it in the third quarter. Over the last seven games, Reed collected seven of his team-high eight sacks.
Here's what Reed's contribution was Saturday -- one assist on a tackle. The junior had one pile jump. That was it.
Reiff has held up.
WR Colin Sandeman: The junior started for DJK and, I think, WR Marvin McNutt, who was slowed with illness this week. Sandeman basically came out of nowhere and led the Hawkeyes with five catches for 47 yards. He also drew a crucial pass interference penalty on Iowa's TD on the game's opening drive. This performance cam after Sandeman missed all of camp with a sore hamstring. He saw little action in Iowa's first two games. He had just one catch going into Saturday.
TE Allen Reisner: The junior from Marion caught three passes for 40 yards. I've written before that I think he has the best hands on the team. After Saturday, it might be a 1a thing. McNutt's one-handed stab was something out of baseball.
Reisner is a veteran player coaches trust. They should trust him.
"We've got to be able to plugs guys in at certain times when people are hurt and still keep moving," Stanzi said. "That being said, obviously, there's not going to be another Tony Moeaki, he's a great player. There's not another Bryan Bulaga, but can we go out there and execute the same? Yeah."
-- Through three first halves, Stanzi has completed 49 percent and has a pass efficiency of 93.
“I figured we'd be barking up that tree,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “I'll tell you the trend I liked was his fourth-quarter performance. I thought that was really good.”
That's another point of view. Stanzi's troublesome starts have bloomed into fantastic finishes.
In three second halves, Stanzi has completed 73.3 percent of his passes and has an efficiency of 163. In the Hawkeyes' 27-17 victory over Arizona, Stanzi was nearly perfect in the fourth quarter, completing 4 of 5 for 43 yards.
Stanzi was perfect on the drive that put away Arizona.
With 13:10 left in the fourth quarter, the Hawkeyes drove 74 yards on 14 plays and chewed up 8:30 off the clock. Running back Brandon Wegher's 2-yard dive gave the Hawkeyes a 27-10 lead with 4:40 left.
Stanzi fueled the drive with 4 of 4 for 43 yards. All four of his completions generated first downs, including third down conversions of 4, 7 and 6 yards. The Hawkeyes converted 10 of 19 third downs against the Wildcats, mostly because of Stanzi's arm.
From this point of view, Stanzi's performance was otherworldly Saturday.
-- Can't overstate how important the 10 of 19 on third down was for Iowa.
That kept UA's defense on the field. Taxed their fitness. It kept Iowa drives alive and eventually paid off with a time of possession advantage of 37:56 to 22:04. That wins every time. Every time. In the fourth quarter, when the score was 17-10, Iowa had the ball for 10:29 and scored 10 points, basically putting the game away.
-- Junior Ryan Donahue averaged 51.0 a punt. He had punts of 62 and 58 yards in the third quarter. No shanks, one return and two inside UA's 20.
Wow.
-- Before the onsides kick, sophomore kicker Trent Mossbrucker was on the end of the sidelines by reporters. He turned to us and said if everything goes right, the ball was going to LB A.J. Edds. Bango! He was right. The only problem was Edds let it bounced off his chest. Fullback Brett Morse saved the day with the recovery.
-- S Tyler Sash has seven interceptions in Iowa's last five games.
-- Going into Saturday, Iowa had two sacks all season. Saturday, DE Adrian Clayborn and DT Karl Klug each had one. Clayborn also had three hurries. Ballard had a hurry also. The Hawkeyes had five tackles for loss.
-- Next up: @ Penn State. Kick off is 7:12 p.m. and it's on ABC national TV. Iowa is 3-0, Penn State is 3-0 and ESPN's College GameDay might be in the house. Probably about 50-50 right now. The next week, it's Arkansas State at 11 a.m. in Kinnick.
Iowa's Marvin McNutt dives for some extra yards but lands just short of the endzone during the second quarter against Arizona at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City on Saturday, September 19, 2009. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
