GOP for government — if it helps Republicans
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Oct. 12, 2012 9:36 am
Do Republicans want smaller government? OK, they want government hands out of our wallets and assault rifles and eliminate pesky government regulations on businesses and financial institutions.
But Republicans do want government intervention in our private lives and beyond. Prevent same-sex marriage. Restrict abortion and birth control. Prevent educators from teaching evolution and medically accurate sex education. And end collective bargaining.
At the national level, Republicans want to subsidize for oil and gas exploration and drilling but quash renewable energy development. Seal the borders so workers can't cross over and take American jobs, but outsource companies to take advantage of cheaper labor and fewer worker protections overseas costing American jobs. Increase military spending and attack Iran.
Republicans don't want their earnings and stock returns affected by government regulations that ensure quality products and services; provide sensible working conditions, reasonable pay and benefits, and safety of workers; preserve the environment; or protect privacy and safeguard consumers.
Can't have it both ways.
