Week 4 rewind: Union prevails in 'track meet'

Union finally got the lead, then finally got a stop.Trailing by two touchdowns on four different occasions, the Knights took the lead for good on Wes Burnside's fifth touchdown, a 2-yarder with 5 minutes left, then held off DeWitt Central, 47-46, in a wild Class 3A District 5 game Friday night at Dysart."It was a track meet," Union Coach Joe Hadachek said after the Knights improved to 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the district. "We were very fortunate at the end; we had one more point than they did."Safety Brad Siebel clinched the win with an interception at the Union 5-yard line.Burnside collected 294 yards on 31 carries. But he wasn't even the leading rusher in the game.Central's Joseph Feldpausch netted 385 yards."They run the ball very well," Hadachek said. "They scored first, and we were playing catch-up the rest of the night."The Sabers led, 26-13, at halftime. They posted leads of 34-19, 40-26 and 46-32, but the Knights answered each time.Trev Hadachek connected with Siebel for a 64-yard touchdown, and a two-point conversion got the Knights within 46-40.Union scored on its first five possessions of the second half, then ran out the clock with the sixth.
Garman makes his markJer Garman set Linn-Mar's single-game rushing mark with 313 yards on 17 carries in the Lions' 45-0 rout of Waterloo West.The old record was 253 yards, set by Clint Nelson in 1992.Garman scored five touchdowns and pushed his season total to 802 yards.
Tough sledding for PrairieAccording to BC Moore's computer calculations, Cedar Rapids Prairie has played the toughest schedule in Class 4A.The Hawks (0-4) have faced Cedar Rapids Washington, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Cedar Falls and Iowa City West, a foursome that have combined for a 13-3 record.It gets no easier next week: Prairie travels to unbeaten Linn-Mar.
Quick slants* North Tama and North Cedar both surrendered their first points of the season in easy wins. North Tama blasted Colo-Nesco, 48-9, while North Cedar handled Cardinal, 47-7.* Class 3A No. 1 Williamsburg scored 28 second-quarter points and drubbed No. 8 Grinnell, 42-7, in a battle of unbeatens. Kelly O'Rourke completed 18 of 28 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns.* North Fayette scored on six plays of 30 yards or longer in a 62-8 romp over Cascade. Jake Greco had scoring runs of 68 and 57 yards.
