Doc's No. 5 -- 2004 vs. Wisconsin
Jul. 10, 2010 12:14 pm
This post coincides with a series on Kirk Ferentz's top 10 games during his Iowa tenure. Mike Hlas and Marc Morehouse also blog on this topic.
Iowa-Wisconsin is, perhaps, college football's most underrated rivalries. Iowa now leads 42-41-2 and the series itself forced league scheduling changes in the mid-1990s when the league skipped the pairing for a two-year stretch.
In 2004, the teams met in Iowa City with a winner-take-all share of the Big Ten title. Despite playing with a depleted running attack, Iowa managed to grind out 76 yards, 35 more than the Badgers. Iowa's defense forced four turnovers to earn Ferentz his second shared Big Ten title in three seasons.
The win earned Iowa a berth in the Capital One Bowl, which itself became another memorable moment in Iowa football history.
Iowa quarterback Drew Tate gets away from Wisconsin's Erasmus James (90) in the first half Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, in Iowa City, Iowa. Tate finished the game 15-of-24 for 186 yards.
