Portion of ceiling collapses at Anamosa school
N/A
Jan. 4, 2010 2:00 pm
One third of the ceiling of a classroom at Anamosa's West Middle School fell around 8:30 am this morning. A row of fluorescent lights attached to the ceiling also fell.
About 18 students and two teachers were in the room at the time. The teacher heard some strange noises coming from the ceiling and then asked all the students to move to the other side of the room. Minutes later, the ceiling fell. No one had any major injuries, but some students did get a few bumps and bruises.
Superintendent Dale Monroe praised the teacher for moving the students out of harm's way. The classroom where this happened now sits empty. In addition, the school has moved all students and staff out of the classroom that sits above as well.
A structural engineer has inspected the school and will discuss options to repair the ceiling with the school board.
