People with disabilities deserve exceptional care

The elimination of services for 108 people with disabilities is going to have profound consequences. Linn County employees pride themselves in the continuity of high-level care they provide to the clients. These clients are extremely vulnerable in their environment and respond to change with difficulty.
It is a shame to see Linn County supervisors close a program as necessary as this. Seeing the pattern that county officials have paved for our fellow friends with disabilities is disheartening. Linn County used to be in the forefront, leading the way to inclusion and acceptance in the community. Now they appear to be on the chopping block when money is tight. At a time when supervisors justified a $10,000-plus raise for themselves, they have chosen to eliminate an essential part of these clients' lives.
You might assume that people with disabilities are an easy target because they are unable to advocate and rally for themselves. Friends, family and other supporters will surface and advocate for their rights and opportunities.
My son has had a severe and profound disability since he received his DPT shot. Our family has relied heavily on the competent loving care he has received from Linn County employees. My son's providers may not all have four-year degrees, but they have hearts of gold and provide amazing care.
