A 24-year-old man who made a plea deal on allegations that he choked a woman in a Wartburg College dormitory has been given probation and a deferred judgment.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that Robert Wims apologized to the woman on Tuesday as he was sentenced.
Wims had made an Alford plea to willful injury and interference causing bodily injury. Under such a plea, Wims didn't admit guilt but agreed that evidence likely existed for a conviction.
The charges will come off Wims' record if he successfully completes up to five years of supervised probation.
Authorities say Wims choked the woman to the point of unconsciousness after walking her to a dorm in March 2010.
