Nov. 29, 2010 8:41 am
Junior Bryce Cartwright is expected to start at point guard for Iowa on Tuesday in the Hawkeyes' ACC-Big Ten Challenge at Wake Forest (6 p.m. ESPNU).
Cartwright replaces sophomore Cully Payne, who will miss the next 6-to-8 weeks following sports hernia surgery, which is scheduled for Tuesday. Payne had started 37 consecutive games for Iowa before sitting out Friday with the injury.
Cartwright, a junior-college transfer hailing from Compton, Calif., averages 9 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds a game for Iowa. Joining him in the lineup is junior Matt Gatens, sophomore Eric May, freshman Melsahn Basabe and senior Jarryd Cole.
Iowa and Wake Forest met in the 2007 ACC-Big Ten Challenge, and the Demon Deacons won 56-47 in Iowa City. Both teams are 3-3 this year with new coaches. Fran McCaffery leads Iowa, while Jeff Bzdelik takes over at Wake Forest.
Wake Forest is 8-2 all-time in the challenge, while Iowa is 2-7. Wake Forest lost to Purdue last year, while Iowa has lost its last four challenge games, including last year to Virginia Tech.
Wake Forest has won its three meetings with Iowa.
