To the editor:
As principal of Metro High School, I am engaged with young people who struggle with the traditional educational format. These young people are the future of Cedar Rapids and I have intentionally watched local politics with awareness that the tones, attitudes and intentions of our representatives, and the policies and initiatives that they pursue, will have a direct and significant impact on these young people.
I know that many of the struggles of young people are not failures of character or intent. They are the symptoms of a system of poverty and cultural disconnections. And while local government is not the solution exclusively, it is an important part of correcting those systems and building a better future for all kids.
It would be easy to see those touched by poverty as problems, but the reality is that these young people will stay in Cedar Rapids for generations and it is our responsibility to reach them. Educational opportunities shaped around three central key areas play a valuable role in this mission: (1) 21st century technology, (2) boundary-free collaboration and (3) 'outside the box” flexibility.
Metro High School is attempting to impact the shortage of skilled workers in the technical areas of ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering).
Susie Weinacht is the City Council candidate who has proved herself to be the most motivated and committed to addressing these issues. She has consistently advocated for the kind of education partnerships that could make a difference and I am inspired by her optimism.
