Ivan Cole, 74, of Independence, Iowa, died on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at his home in Independence.

Ivan was born on Oct. 14, 1946, in Independence, the son of Oliver and Ruth (Bantz) Cole. He was a 1965 graduate of the Independence High School, and shortly after joined the U.S. Navy. Ivan attended the University of Northern Iowa to study engineering. He went on to work at John Deer in Waterloo, Iowa, and at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, before joining the team at Triangle Plastic in Independence. Ivan was proud of the work he and everyone did at Triangle Plastics put in. He retired in 1996. On June 16, 1973, he married Kay Reed in Princeton, Ill. Together, they made their home between Independence and Masonville, Iowa.

He was a member of the Buffalo Creek Golf Course, Pat's Tap Pool League and competed for many years. Ivan was an avid reader. He would often look up subjects to help his friends and family to give them advice.

Ivan is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kay Cole, Independence; his stepdaughters, Jackie (Duane) Franck, Independence, and Kristi (Chip) Cooksley, Winthrop; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Delmar (Marcia) Cole, Grundy Center.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Ruth Cole; and a brother, Kenny Cole.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 2, at the Reiff Family Center-Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, at the funeral home.
