Not really sure what judges saved us from

Thank God for Bob Vander Plaats, a man of inestimable courage, vision and determination. Who else could have lost a party primary only to return to run a well-financed campaign to save Iowans from “activist” judges, aka Black Robed Bandits making laws from the bench?
Who else could save our rights by pointing out that “if we lose this right, all our rights could be lost”?
As a straight, it is a matter of monumental indifference to me who marries who of what gender.
But I do care massively about my rights. I don't want to lose any.
To summarize:
1. The Iowa Legislature passed a law stating a marriage had to be between one man and one woman.
2. The Constitution assures us that all citizens will be treated equally.
3. The gay movement filed suit claiming such a law denied them equal treatment.
4. The Supreme Court looked at the Constitution and ruled unanimously that those citizens were not being treated equally. Therefore, the law in question was not constitutional.
The court did not make a law. It declared a law was unconstitutional. Big difference.
So the issue goes back to where it all began - the Iowa Legislature, which may want to write a new law that will be questioned by affected parties and ultimately be reviewed by a new Supreme Court that will rule on its constitutionality.
It could continue thus for years.
What right did I nearly lose? What exactly did the judges take away from me?
