Iowa-Nebraska is the undercard for Boston College-Miami?
Mike Hlas May. 25, 2011 11:34 am
What would the world be like without perceived slights? A lot better, of course.
But how do you Iowa and Nebraska feel about your big, epic, big, colossal, big, all-encompassing football game of Friday, Nov. 25 starting at 11 a.m., a warm-up act for the rest of the day's games?
Yes, the Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers are on ABC nationally, so that's some nice news for both. But it's not exactly prime-time, is it? Or more specifically, prime daytime time.
For at least the last two years, the Colorado-Nebraska games have had 2:30 p.m. starts. West Virginia-Pittsburgh kicked off at 11 a.m., last year. WVU-Pitt is a big rivalry game. In West Virginia and Pittsburgh, that is.
But Iowa-Nebraska is ABC's opener for Boston College-Miami at 2:30. An ACC game. I get it that Boston and Miami are bigger markets than Omaha and Des Moines. I get it that Iowa and Nebraska may not resonate nationally as much as fans of both may think. But ... it's a Big Ten game between two established programs. ACC football doesn't move any needles, to use a cliche I swear I'll never use again this month.
It isn't as if the Nov. 25 schedule is jampacked with great games, forcing the Big Ten's first day-after-Thanksgiving game to take an early time slot. Twelve FBS games are on the day's slate. Five are Mid-American Conference games. Then there's Louisville-South Florida, UTEP-Central Florida, Arkansas-LSU at 1:30 on CBS, BC-Miami, Iowa-Nebraska, California-Arizona State at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN, and Pitt-West Virginia at a time to be determined. Those two met at 11 a.m., Central time, last year.
This isn't a big deal, and the BC-Miami kickoff time was set earlier this month. But you kind of thought that with all the hype here on the prairie, Iowa-Nebraska in Game 12 wouldn't have the same kickoff time as Iowa-Tennessee Tech or Nebraska-Tennessee Chattanooga in Game 1.
