UPDATE: Employees found a bullet hole in a seventh-floor window at the Alliant Energy Tower in downtown Cedar Rapids earlier this week, but there are no indications that any person or the building was targeted, police said.
Someone shot the window on the northeast side of the building between 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said. No one was in the space, which is leased to a private company, when the window was shot.
Officers found one bullet hole on the window sill when they arrived to take a report.
“There were no shell casings around outside,” police Sgt. Joe Clark said. “We have no idea where it came from.”
Alliant Energy spokesman Scott Drzycimski said employees were notified of the incident by e-mail Thursday. He said there is no information to suggest any threats against an employee at the building or Alliant Energy. Police are treating the case as criminal mischief.
“We don't have any reason to think that this was anything more than a random situation,” Drzycimski said.
Depending on the condition of the bullet, Clark said police may send it to the state laboratory where it would be tested and entered into a national ballistics database. From there, they may be able to link it to a particular weapon and possibly a person.
“Without any witnesses, and our only piece of physical evidence is that projectile, to try and determine that will be a long shot,” Clark said.
