Letter: Sodium is only half the equation

In a June 14 letter, 'Excessive sodium intake is hazardous,” Jim Pruitt refers to an earlier column that says the war on salt is based on bad science. Pruitt then warns us not to twist science to fit our politics. I agree.
But here's a little science for you: Sodium is only half the equation. You also need to be ingesting the right amount of potassium. Not too much, not too little. If you're getting enough potassium (think fruits and vegetables), you can worry less about the sodium.
I'm a chemist, but no need to take my word for it - do a search on 'sodium-potassium balance” to learn more about this.
