CONTEST: Win a piece of Boise State's blue turf (Really!)
Mike Hlas Nov. 22, 2010 2:41 pm
It's promotion-time in college football right now, when the marketing departments send out alleged information and actual junk to sportswriters to curry favor when it comes to All-America teams, Top 25 polls and such.
Monday, Boise State sent me a small piece of blue artificial turf, like the stuff on which it plays its home games. It also sent me a bunch of statistics. Like the the fact BSU won more games from 2000-2009 (112) than any major-college program did in a decade since the late 19th Century.
The chunk of blue turf is more interesting.
But I'm not a collector, a saver, a hoarder. I have witnesses to prove it. Bowl games used to give souvenirs to media people who covered the games. I always donated (dumped) mine off on someone who wanted it or who I felt should want it. At Iowa's first Orange Bowl, we were given duffel bags. I handed mine out a rental car window to someone on a Miami street corner who was watching the world go by. He frantically ripped it open hoping to find something inside it. When he found it was empty, he didn't seem all that grateful.
It was heartbreaking. To him, anyway. What, a free bag wasn't good enough?
But I digress. I will give the patch of Boise blue (pictured here) to the one of you who offers the best caption for the photo, which was shot on some of the finest carpet in all of the Gazette/SourceMedia building. I will be the judge and jury, and will declare a winner on Wednesday. Then we'll work out the transfer of this glorious prize.
So caption away. And yes, wise guys, I still have a New Orleans Saints windbreaker to be given away another time. It may be a little bleached out by the sun after sitting in the back seat of my car all year, but who would wear one of those things because they thought they looked good, anyway?
