A CHAMPION'S CHALLENGE: The Iowa Women's Leadership Conference in Coralville drew an overflow audience for its keynote speaker event. No wonder. The speaker was Maya Angelou - 83-year-old renowned poet, professor, entertainer, historian and civil-rights activist who is the daughter of a former slave and a Presidential Medal of Freedom winner - challenged area women to accept responsibility “for the time they have and the space they occupy.”

TREKFEST ON: Thanks to major donations from non-profit Mindbridge Foundation, Iowa River Products and Riverside Casino, as well as many smaller donations, Riverside's annual TrekFest will be held this summer after all.

KUDOS, DISPATCHERS: The Delaware County Communications Center dispatching crew is the state's public safety communicator team of the year for their performance during the massive flooding caused by the breaching of the Lake Delhi Dam on July 24. Robert Lane Jr. of the Jackson County 911 Center was named telecommunicator of the year for his handling of the July 4 Bellevue parade tragedy that killed one person and injured nearly 30.
