Latest cable merger may be about survival

I chuckled when I saw Wednesday's (Feb. 19) cartoon of a hose from the cable mergers hooking up to a consumer's pocket. I chuckled because I think the trick will be on them. I know more and more folks who've quit cable altogether. If costs continue to rise, they will price themselves out of the marketplace.
With Smart TV's, Netflix, Hulu+, Amazon, Apple TV, etc., consumers no longer have to be linear viewers. They can watch TV at their convenience on whatever device they prefer. Once the older generation catches on to this style of viewership, the cable companies may go the way of the “buggy whip” manufacturers.
The latest merger of Comcast and Time Warner may ultimately be a move for survival.
