Basketball recruiting update: At least 2 visitors to Carver this week
Mar. 24, 2011 6:14 pm
Iowa will have at least two possible recruits on campus this weekend, including one in an official capacity.
Prime target Gabe Olaseni, a 6-foot-9 post, is visiting this weekend, according to Tom Kakert of www.HawkeyeReport.com. Olaseni is a London, England native and helped lead Sunrise Christian Academy from Wichita, Kan., to the NACA Division I national title.
Olaseni also has offers from Xavier, Auburn and Ole Miss and possibly could visit those schools in recent weeks, according to www.rivals.com. Iowa also targets Olaseni's teammate, 6-foot-9 forward Eric Katenda, a Cameroon native who plans to visit Wake Forest and Notre Dame the next two weekends. Iowa also is in the mix for Katenda.
Here's ESPN's scouting report of Katenda (ESPN does not have an evaluation of Olaseni):
Strengths:
Katenda is a long and athletic hybrid forward who has a very high ceiling. He runs the floor very well, moves well laterally, is extremely bouncy, and plays high above the rim. He has a good skill base facing the basket as he is very smooth handling the ball in the open floor or facing up and attacking his man in the quarter court. He has a soft touch in the mid-range area and can even step out and knock down the occasional three-pointer. His mobility is a major weapon defensively and he is already a good shot blocker and high volume rebounder.
Weaknesses:
While Katenda is very skilled for a player his size, he gets a little too enamored with the perimeter at times. He is much more comfortable facing the basket then playing with his back to it and would do well to capitalize on his athleticism more consistently in the post instead of settling for so many long jumpers. He isn't a big fan of contact inside the paint on either end of the floor and needs to develop the killer instinct to be great.
Bottom Line:
Katenda is an undeniable talent with great size, length, athleticism, and skills for a player his size. He needs to become a little more physically assertive and concentrate on impacting the game more in the paint instead of constantly trying to prove his worth on the perimeter.
Iowa has two scholarship slots open for this fall. Cedar Rapids Washington guard Josh Oglesby and Strongsville (Ohio) forward Aaron White already have signed letters of intent.
Iowa has several offers to 2011 recruits, including Frederick (Md.) Community College guard Anthony Hubbard, who visited Iowa March 4. Prep or high school players with offers, according to Kakert, include guard Eli Carter (Brewster (N.H.) Academy, guard Shaquille Stokes (Brooklyn, N.Y. Abraham Lincoln) and forward Kamari Murphy (Brooklyn, N.Y., Abraham Lincoln).
Georges Tiang, a junior from the Tilton School in New Hampshire, picked up an Iowa offer a few days ago, according to Kakert. Tiang, a 6-foot-7 forward, plays AAU ball with BABC in Boston. Tiang is part of the 2012 class and is visiting Iowa State and Iowa unofficially this week.
Iowa earned one 2012 commitment last week: 6-foot-10 post Kyle Meyer of Alpharetta, Ga. Iowa has three more scholarships available for 2012.
The Hawkeyes finished 11-20 in their first year under Coach Fran McCaffery.
The area in the addition to Carver-Hawkeye Arena will become the new main entrance during a tour Saturday, March 5, 2011, in Iowa City, Iowa. (Jim Slosiarek/SourceMedia Group News)
