All of C.R. needs attention, investment

Cedar Rapids residents who are trying to pit downtown needs against neighborhood needs are missing the big picture and too narrowly focused.
I am all for neighborhood investment and I'm all for downtown development. We can't have one without the other. What attracts people to communities is a vibrant, inviting downtown, with a variety of cultural activities, shopping, restaurants and green streets. What makes them stay are safe, charming neighborhoods, with easy access to schools, groceries and other basic needs.
Downtown should be a charming neighborhood, too. If we don't have business investment with good jobs in downtown, we won't have enough tax base to help with neighborhoods. The 2008 flood devastated both and both need new investment.
This council, City Manager and staff have worked miracles in getting investment that will benefit our collective long-term livability. Our city leaders need to see the big picture for Cedar Rapids in initiatives to help the downtown and neighborhoods move ahead.
