Fire officials say a 77-year-old woman in Cedar Rapids was taken to a hospital after an apartment fire.
Cedar Rapids Fire Department spokesman Greg Buelow says firefighters were called about 7:30 a.m. Saturday to Oak Hill Manor, a two-story, 24-unit apartment complex. They found thick smoke and quickly extinguished a small fire in a second-floor unit.
A neighbor found a resident who appeared confused and possibly disoriented by the smoke. The woman, whose name wasn't released, was taken to Mercy Medical Center.
The fire caused smoke damage to the second floor. It appeared that smoke alarms didn't function properly, and residents will be kept out of their apartments until the alarm system can be repaired.
