Scranton, Nels
Nels Scranton, 64, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at his home. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, with military rites. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Scattering of the ashes will be at a later date in California.
Survivors include his mother, Pearl Scranton of Cedar Rapids; two children, Michael and Melissa Scranton of Oakland, Calif., and Dawn Scranton and Tim Long of Canton, Ga.; and two brothers, Kent and Mary Scranton of Solon and Kelly and Connie Scranton of Rochester, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Neal Scranton and his wife, Betty.
Nels was born Oct. 7, 1946, the son of Wade and Pearl (Arnold) Scranton in Ottumwa. He graduated from Webster Grove High School in 1964. Nels served two tours with the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam, where he was awarded two Bronze Stars. He then moved to Cedar Rapids, where he was a salesman for years and drove truck before retiring in 2005.
Nels was a member of the Anamosa Bowhunters. He was an avid marksman and enjoyed competing and was proud of his gun collection.
