Letter: Mayor wrong to propose tax increase

I applaud The Gazette's articles concerning the proposed tax increase for the Cedar Rapids Public Library. I love books and we need libraries; however, it is troubling when our mayor tries an 'end run” after the property tax levy was defeated.
When one plans to build a house, the cost of construction is considered as well as the taxes, utilities, maintenance and expenses for upkeep. Why didn't this apply to the library construction? Did they not estimate what it would cost to have stable funding for the months or years to come? Why is the current funding insufficient?
Let the people have a say in the matter. Mayor Ron Corbett should not propose a tax increase without proper input from citizens.
I heartily agree that the final verdict should be up to the voters.
