Food drive was a success

I would like to thank everyone involved with the May 11 National Association of Letter Carriers food drive. In 1991, a pilot drive was held in 10 cities after discussions by NALC, U.S. Postal Service and the AFL-CIO Community Services Department. The pilot proved so successful that work began on making it a nationwide effort.
It is now the largest one-day food drive in the United States. Union and non-union residents come together on this day to support and assist the NALC union with its effort to stamp out hunger. Union members from the area staffed the HACAP food bank on May 11 and I am happy to say that this year's drive was again a success, with about 30,000 pounds collected in the Cedar Rapids area.
The food that was received will truly help those among us that are in need. Our entire community can be proud.
