Letter: Speak out against mayaor’s tax plan

I agree with the uproar about the 3-by-5 tax increase to raise tax dollars for the library. The voters did not approve the increase, but the mayor has found a way to impose a tax regardless of the feelings of the majority.
I think a better way to raise more tax dollars would be to rescind the 10-year tax abatements that were so generously handed out after the flood. It makes no sense to me that a person making six figures, living in a penthouse, pays no taxes. I have looked at some of the units that have a listing price of $300,000 plus with no property taxes for 10 years. I also have looked at the names of other tenants in the buildings and they aren't people displaced by the flood. The tenants are people that can afford to pay and should be paying taxes. I'm confident that the people who are benefiting from the abatement voted for the library tax because, guess what, it doesn't affect them.
We need to speak out against the mayor's tax plan. If the council goes ahead with this unfair and inequitable taxation, we need to make some serious changes in our city government.
