Hlas' AP Top 25 poll for Week 4
Mike Hlas Sep. 25, 2011 12:22 pm
The only wrestling this week was after the top 17. No one seemed worthy to be No. 18. No. 19, yes.
1. LSU (4-0). This was my No. 1 team after the first week of the season when the Tigers handled an Oregon team that remains pretty good. Three wins over ranked teams in neutral or road games, the latest over a West Virginia team that is good and a site that is hostile. Now I see the rest of the AP panel have caught up and made LSU the overall No. 1. Which scares me.
2. Oklahoma (3-0). Back-to-back wins over Florida State and Missouri are nothing to sneeze at.
3. Alabama (4-0). Hard not to have the Tide higher after rocking Arkansas.
4. Oklahoma State (4-0). Saturday's win at Texas A&M may be the best road win by anyone in the nation so far.
5. Boise State (3-0). Resume still looks good. Whipped a good Georgia team in Atlanta, and the Toledo team it crushed on the road got ripped off by refs at Syracuse Saturday.
6. Stanford (3-0).
7. Wisconsin (4-0). Badgers go from playing punching bags to a Nebraska team that can fight back.
8. South Carolina (4-0). Ruined Vanderbilt's dream of a perfect season.
9. Oregon (3-1). Ducks have let the season-opening loss to LSU roll off their backs.
10. Clemson (4-0). Consecutive home wins over Auburn and Florida State. But this could be a brief appearance this high in the polls, with a game at Virginia Tech next.
11. Florida (4-0). Alabama at Florida Saturday.
12. South Florida (4-0). Bulls haven't beaten anyone of consequence since their season-starting win at Notre Dame, but that's a better road win than anyone I've ranked below them. They play at Pittsburgh Saturday.
13. Baylor (3-0). Next five games are against teams that are either unbeaten or have been ranked this season.
14. Nebraska (4-0). Here's how to leap into my top four: Win at Madison Saturday night.
15. TCU (3-1).
16. Michigan (4-0). Wolverines have yet to leave Ann Arbor, and are home again Saturday for Minnesota.
17. Virginia Tech (4-0). How is it that an ACC team has had two road games (East Carolina, Marshall) against teams from Conference USA?
18. Georgia Tech (4-0). Nice home win over previous unbeaten North Carolina Saturday.
19. Texas A&M (2-1). Oklahoma State fans were chanting "Big 12! Big 12!" in College Station Saturday.
20. Illinois (4-0). I felt I had to lift the Illini up even after a narrow win over Western Michigan, because they beat Arizona State the week before and my No. 21 team is ...
21. Arizona State (3-1). Home wins over Missouri and USC.
22. Kansas State (3-0). Hey, K-State won at Miami. The one in Florida.
23. Texas (3-0). Getting ready to come to Iowa State.
24. West Virginia (3-1). Kudos for getting involved in a series with LSU. If only more teams would schedule up like that.
25. Iowa State (3-0). That win over Iowa two weeks ago has looked better with each passing week. Now the Cyclones have a chance to get into everybody's Top 25 Saturday night in Ames.
