Grasp current events to qualify to vote

The GOP is pushing for voter photo ID in many states. After reading Gary Rees' July 5 letter, “Liberals, not Bush, responsible for mess,” I would suggest that everyone be given a current events test to see if we are qualified to vote.
The writer stated that the Frank-Dodd bill created the housing crisis. The bill they wrote was the Wall Street Reform Act.
In 2002, it was George Bush who started the housing crisis when he said “there is a disparity in minority homeownership.” He said the new rules would create 5.5 million new minority homeowners. Those subprime mortgages created the crisis long before the 2008 election.
The writer said that when President Barack Obama took office, the unemployment rate was 4.6 percent. Wrong again. The national average was 10 percent.
Let's hope most voters have a better grip of the facts by November.
