Sonja Raynette Baber, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, June 18, 2021, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services:
10 a.m. Wednesday at St.
John XXIII by the Rev Richmond Dzekoe. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A vigil service will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family
Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday after 9 a.m. at the church. Family and friends are requested to wear a mask and comply with social distancing guidelines when attending the visitation and service.
Sonja is survived by her six children, Chris (Deborah) and Bridgit (Jim) Humpherys, both of Cedar Rapids, Monica (Bruce) Holcomb of Colorado Springs, Colo., Michelle (Joel) Severson of Fairfax, Victoria (Brandon) Hoffman of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Joe (Nicole) of Fairfax; 22 grandchildren, Danielle, Zachary, Ava, Megan, Marshall, Skye, Cyan, Tai Mei, Caleb, Hanna, Samuel, Dylan, Braxton, Carson, Mallory, Gage, Layton, Teegan, Braxton, Korbin, Kenzie and Blayde; five great-grandchildren, Grace, Austin, William, Annabelle and Hazel; three sisters, Amy Hardebeck, Marita Purcell and Pat (Gary) Eckley; her brother, Paul (Pearl) Rogers; and brother-in-law, Joseph Boton.
In addition to her husband Lowell, Sonja was preceded in death by her sister, Glenda Boton, and sister-in-law, Patricia Dickman.
Sonja was born June 19, 1938, in Kokomo, Ind., the daughter of Glen and Charlotte Thatcher Rogers. She graduated in 1956 from St. Joseph Academy in Kokomo. She married Lowell Baber on June 22, 1957, in Kokomo. He died Nov. 29, 2020. She was a member of St. John XXIII Catholic Church. Sonja and her husband guided their lives with their strong faith and were very active members of St. John XXIII Catholic Church
Sonja loved her family and could always be found cheering at her grandkids games and activities. She enjoyed quilting and gathering friends together for tea parties. Holidays and birthdays were always a special time around her house as those days gave her an excuse to bake her favorite recipes and be creative in uniquely decorating all the tables and place settings.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
