Sweet corn is abundant this time of year

To the editor:
It is a great time of the year. One can get ears of sweet corn here and there for several weeks. And one can often get an extra ear or two if the ears are not quite up to par.
The other day I wanted a half dozen and got seven. The young boy asked if I couldn't buy 12. I sensed he was bored and wanted to go home. Then, on Tuesday, at a different stand, I ordered six, got home and found eight perfect ears in the sack. Again, the sellers, a boy and girl pair, seemed to have had enough of selling.
All this reminds me of a 'baker's dozen.” Of course, it means you get 13 instead of 12, a gratuity from the baker. But, wait! There's more to it than that. It is really 12 of today's and one of yesterday's. Hooray for summer!
