Tax dollars must go to intended use
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jul. 22, 2013 4:05 pm
I read the July 17 article (“Third time a charm for sales tax?”) concerning the extension of the 1-cent sales tax due to expire in 2014.
I have no objection to extending the tax, as Mayor Ron Corbett stated, to fix the city streets, which are badly in need of repairs. I have no objection to extending it long enough for flood control and fixing the streets, too, if the tax dollars are earmarked for these purposes only and to make this stipulation in the extension so that none of the monies set aside for these projects is diverted to some other entity. Too often we vote tax dollars for one thing and they are used for something different than what they are intended for; that is why the taxpayers are hesitant to vote for anything.
You give us that guarantee and then an accounting of funds spent, I doubt if anyone would vote no. I would give it a yes, and my home was not one involved in the flood of 2008.
