Varner claims 100th win

Dec. 29, 2009 5:58 pm
Iowa State national champion Jake Varner reached an elite group of wrestlers Tuesday.
Varner decked Patrick Bond of Illinois in 2 minutes, 37 seconds, claiming his 100th career win for the Cyclones. He dismissed the milestone.
“I didn't even know or pay attention to it,” said Varner, top-ranked at 197 pounds. “It's just another win.”
Varner advanced to the quarterfinals with the pin and improved his record to 100-10. He also won by fall in his first match, sticking American's Kenny Clessas in 1:24.
“It's real important, especially in a tournament like this,” said Varner, who won a Midlands title as a sophomore, finishing second as a junior and third as a freshman. “You not only want a title for yourself but a team title. Those bonus points are real big.”
