Coach of Kent State (Iowa State's opponent Saturday) says wild things
Mike Hlas Sep. 16, 2009 10:52 am
Kent State football coach Doug Martin leads his team against Iowa State Saturday night in Kent, Ohio. Martin coaches a violent, emotional sport.
The violent part of it surfaced last Saturday in KSU's 34-7 loss at Boston College. Running back Eugene Jarvis suffered a kidney injury and will miss the rest of the season.
The emotional part of it surfaced this week when Martin suggested what he thinks should happen if the NCAA denies his fifth-year senior another year of eligibility, a medical exemption.
''If [Jarvis] doesn't [get a sixth year]," Martin said, "then somebody's not doing their job or the NCAA doesn't care about kids. . . . If this kid doesn't get a sixth year, everybody in Kent should storm the NCAA, and we should burn the place down.''
So that's emotional and violent.
The loss of Jarvis hurts, but Martin was bold in his forecast for the rest of the season.
''What's going to be written about us and what's going to be in the media is that it's going to be tough for us to play without Jarvis. 'That's what's being said at every other MAC school right now, from Akron to Miami: Kent State's done, they don't have Jarvis anymore.
''We may not have our starting quarterback and we don't have our starting running back. But I don't care. I guarantee every Kent State fan right now this is going to be a winning football team, and this football team is going to be in a bowl game.''

Kent State hasn't had a winning season since 2001, by the way. It hasn't been to a bowl since 1972.
