Cargill will close its Des Moines soybean crushing plant next month and invest $20 million to modernize its east side soybean crushing plant in Cedar Rapids next summer.
The company said 22 jobs will be eliminated in the closure of the Des Moines facility, while employment will remain stable at the Cedar Rapids facility.
Overcapacity in United States production of soymeal - used almost entirely as livestock feed - was the primary reason for Cargill's decision to consolidate its production in Iowa, company spokesman Mark Klein said Thursday. Cargill will continue to serve customers through its soybean crushing plants in Sioux City and Iowa Falls in addition to the Cedar Rapids plant.
