Abbe Center closing difficult to understand

The closing of Abbe Center is difficult to understand. Our most vulnerable population is now at risk.
Our nephew was a resident at Abbe Center for more than four decades. When the decision was made to start putting residents into apartments, Royce was one of those selected to go. He hadn't lived in the apartment long when he fell. He laid in the living area from 2 a.m. until staff came in the morning. Royce died about a month later from complications of that fall.
I believe Royce would be alive today if he hadn't been forced out of his home into apartment life. Do not misunderstand, the staff at the apartment complex were caring professionals. They staffed the apartments daytime hours only, taking residents on errands and appointments. Royce needed more care than was available.
The remaining residents at Abbe will be forced into alternative situations soon. When did we become so uncaring to allow this?
The Abbe Center has served this area well. The building has been a safe haven. It is difficult to believe better management couldn't make this work again. If it saves one life, it is worth it.
