Letter: Let free enterprise dictate casino viability

Alta M. Cook's guest column hit the nail on the head: Let the will of the electorate and free enterprise prove the viability of any new casino ('Iowa casinos shouldn't fear competition,” Feb. 15). If a casino fails, it fails. That philosophy works in everything from styling salons to golf courses.
I'd ask once again, why the State Racing and Gaming Commission has assumed it has the power to limit new casinos. When the State Racing and Gaming Commission was formed, I understood its mission was to regulate the honesty and fairness of gaming facilities and to assure that a percent of the profits were distributed to not-for-profits, as required by law. I add my thanks to Gene Kopecky's insightful effort in this regard.
