Haugejorde, Bernice Ruth
The life of Bernice Ruth Haugejorde will be celebrated on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. with the service beginning at 2 p.m.
Bernice Ruth Haugejorde peacefully passed away on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at the age of 93.
Bernice Winckler was born on July 23, 1920, in Pierre, S.D., to Paul and Edna Winckler. She graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., and began her teaching career. Ole Haugejorde, Augustana graduate, and Bernice Winckler were married on June 4, 1944. They had three daughters. Ole passed away in 1990 and their daughter Susan passed away from cancer in 2005.
Bernice's professional career spanned over 50 years. She graduated with a double Master's Degree in Learning Disabilities and Behavioral Modification from the University of Iowa. She was in many community organizations including PEO, University Women, Coffee, Tea and Conversations, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Women's Group and several Bridge clubs.
Bernice was an avid Bridge player and spent her last evening on Earth in her hospital room playing a fun game of cards with her grandson, Addison Wasson, and her daughters, Lynn Sauter and Sally Elliman. Bernice loved her family times and will be greatly missed by seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, other family members and many friends.
Bernice's quality of life was greatly enhanced by our dear friend and caregiver, Ann Larew. Bernice supported the Iowa City Hospice and Iowa City Crisis Center. In addition to flowers, the family welcomes memorial gifts to the outreaches.
