Take a look at real cause of debt
The Gazette Opinion Staff

The focus on eliminating trillions of dollars of debt seems to be through cutting social programs and education. Has our debt come about through humanitarian endeavors? The less than 1 percent we give in foreign humanitarian aid, the amount of money spent on education, the support we give to emotionally, mentally and physically handicapped, the assistance we give to the jobless and our care for the ill and infirm have put us in trillions of dollars of debt?
Social programs that support life and protect our environment evidently are the cause of our trouble. The only life that needs enabling and protecting is life in the womb. Socialism has often been frowned upon. But capitalism without a social aspect is wanting.
The trillions we are paying for the wars we enter and the huge amount of sophisticated weapons we buy should not be seriously considered in reducing the budget? Why? And then the hundreds of military bases we have around the world that we financially support as well as the military foreign assistance we give to countries that protect our interests even though some of these countries have a poor human rights record.
President Eisenhower told us to beware of the military-industrial complex. How long can we afford to protect these interests and ignore the real cause of our debt?
